From Nomad Visa to Permanent Residency: Three Countries Where It's Possible
citizenships.legal · November 2, 2026
Most digital nomad visas are dead ends, but three countries offer a clear legal pathway from temporary remote work permits to permanent residency and even citizenship.
Digital nomad visas have proliferated across the globe in recent years, with more than 50 countries now offering some version of a remote work permit. But there's a catch that most applicants don't realize until it's too late: the vast majority of these programs are designed as revolving doors. You come, you stay a year or two, and then you leave. There's no pathway forward.
If you're thinking long-term—if you can imagine yourself building a life somewhere beyond the initial adventure—this matters enormously.
The good news: a small handful of countries have structured their nomad visa programs differently. In these jurisdictions, your time as a digital nomad can count toward permanent residency, creating a genuine immigration pathway rather than just an extended tourist experience.
Why Most Nomad Visas Lead Nowhere
Before we look at the exceptions, it's worth understanding why most digital nomad programs don't lead to residency.
Many countries designed these visas as economic stimulus tools—ways to attract spending without immigration. The programs explicitly state that time spent under the nomad visa doesn't count toward residency requirements. You're essentially a long-term visitor, not a resident in the immigration sense.
When your visa expires, you start from scratch if you want to pursue permanent residency through another route. Those two years you spent living, working, and contributing to the local economy? Irrelevant for immigration purposes.
The Three Countries With a Real Pathway
Portugal
Portugal's digital nomad visa, introduced in 2022, allows remote workers to live in the country while working for foreign employers or clients. What makes Portugal unique is that holders of this visa are considered legal residents for immigration purposes.
After five years of legal residency—which can include time on the nomad visa—you become eligible to apply for permanent residency. The government decides on each application individually, but the legal framework treats nomad visa holders as residents, not tourists.
Portugal also offers a path to citizenship after five years of permanent residency, with some language requirements and other criteria that our partner lawyers can explain in detail.
Spain
Spain launched its digital nomad visa in 2023, and it includes a feature that many other programs lack: the time you spend on this visa counts toward the ten-year requirement for Spanish citizenship.
Spain's path is longer than Portugal's, but it's genuine. After ten years of legal residency, you can apply for citizenship. The nomad visa gives you legal residency status, meaning your years as a digital nomad move you toward that ten-year mark.
There are some complexities around residency requirements and the distinction between residency and physical presence that the licensed immigration lawyers we work with can clarify based on your specific situation.
Greece
Greece's digital nomad visa, available since 2021, offers perhaps the clearest pathway of all. The visa grants you resident status for tax and immigration purposes, and that time counts toward Greece's seven-year permanent residency requirement.
After seven years of continuous legal residence, you can apply for permanent residency. After that, Greek law provides a further path to citizenship, though the government evaluates citizenship applications based on numerous factors including integration, language skills, and ties to the country.
What "Pathway" Actually Means
When we say these countries offer a pathway, we're describing a legal framework—not a guarantee.
Immigration decisions rest with governments, and they evaluate applications based on many factors: whether you've maintained continuous residence, paid your taxes, learned the language, stayed out of legal trouble, and demonstrated genuine ties to the country.
The difference between these three countries and others is structural: they've created programs where your time as a digital nomad counts as legal residency. You're on the ladder. Whether you ultimately reach permanent residency depends on meeting all requirements and on government approval, but at least you're accumulating qualifying time.
What to Consider Before Choosing This Path
The countries that offer pathways from nomad visa to permanent residency tend to have more requirements on the front end:
- Higher income thresholds than "dead-end" nomad visas
- More extensive documentation requirements
- Tax residency implications from day one
- Expectations around minimum physical presence
These aren't casual arrangements. You're entering an immigration pathway, which means more paperwork, more compliance requirements, and more stakes.
